Egypt hosts over 800,000 refugees and asylum-seekers from diverse nationalities, including Sudan, Syria, South Sudan, Eritrea, Yemen, Somalia and Iraq (UNHCR, 2024). Most refugees and asylum-seekers live in Greater Cairo and Alexandria.
JOINT HUB SUPPORT
The Joint Hub began supporting UNHCR and WFP in Egypt in June 2023, following a scoping mission and a request from the country operations. The Joint Hub is leading and coordinating collaborative work, which aims to assess refugee needs based on a ‘one refugee’ approach (regardless of country of origin) to inform targeting/prioritization of basic needs assistance and longer-term planning for socio-economic inclusion, whilst ensuring accountability to affected people. In addition, technical discussions are organized to discuss joint programmatic interventions to promote refugee self-reliance and sustainable responses grounded in evidence from the joint assessment.
“It has been a very useful, hands-on experience on all aspects of developing a targeting model. I have learned so much about survey sampling, different targeting mechanisms, their pros and cons, and about other countries' experiences. Presentations on appeals and communication have been especially useful.”
Feedback from UNHCR staff in Egypt
“The work with the Hub was vital to coordinate the review and update of the targeting methodology between UNHCR and WFP. The Hub played a key role in making this happen.”
