Cameroon hosts over 1.5 million people forcibly displaced, including over one million internally displaced persons, more than 440,000 refugees and asylum-seekers (UNHCR, 2025). The refugees are predominantly from the Central African Republic and Nigeria, while the internally displaced persons mainly come from Cameroon’s Far North, North-West, and South-West regions.

Over 23 percent of Cameroonians live below the international poverty line (US$2.15 per person per day), and extreme poverty could reach 25 percent by 2026 – affecting 8 million people. In 2024, 3.1 million people in Cameroon faced high levels of acute food insecurity.

JOINT HUB SUPPORT

With support from the Joint Hub, UNHCR and WFP undertook a joint assessment mission (JAM) for Nigerian refugees in the Far North region in Cameroon. The assessment, which was completed in 2022, aimed to inform the understanding of household vulnerability and future programme design.
