Mozambique is one of the most disaster-prone and climate-vulnerable countries in the world, regularly experiencing extreme weather events such as droughts, floods, and cyclones. These recurrent shocks—combined with ongoing conflict, seasonal lean periods, and economic shocks—pose severe threats to food security across the country.
As of March 2025, more than 700,000 people remain internally displaced due to conflict and disasters. In addition, Mozambique hosts over 24,000 refugees and asylum seekers, further stretching limited resources and compounding existing humanitarian needs.
JOINT HUB SUPPORT
Since late 2020, the Joint Hub has supported UNHCR and WFP country operations in Mozambique with a focus on needs-based assistance delivery and enhancing refugee self-reliance. This has included joint programme design for livelihoods in Maratane refugee settlement, strengthening accountability to affected people, developing a joint donor engagement strategy, and rolling out the Call to Action (C2A).
As of May 2025, in response to the evolving situation, the Joint Hub is supporting collaboration towards transition from humanitarian assistance dependency to sustainable responses in Maratane.
